So how about those Es?

Environmental Sustainability
We’ve tripled the size of the City’s sustainability department, dedicated revenue streams to support that work (including $500,000 per year from the Northwestern Community Benefits package) and ensured that the climate action ethos has permeated city administration. We’ve banned gas powered leaf blowers, protected our tree canopy, and built an all-electric animal shelter. Our carbon footprint is down more than 40% since we started tracking. It’s going to take a lot more work to get to our goal of zero carbon by 2050 and I look forward to continuing that effort with passage of the Healthy Buildings Ordinance!

Engagement
With regular monthly ward meetings (42 as of January 2025), almost as many drop-in office hours, multiple special neighborhood meetings, monthly newsletters (sign up here), and postcards to all addresses in the ward: I’ve made myself available to Fourth Ward residents at every opportunity. I’ve welcomed your input on the issues of the day and I’m proud of our growing sense of community.

Equity
I’ll highlight my role in addressing Evanston’s homelessness crisis by supporting the Margarita Inn. Taking to heart the concerns of nearby neighbors, I led the development of a regulatory framework which gives the City oversight and authority to ensure that the facility will be continuously well run. Walking down Oak Avenue today you’d never know that the Margarita Inn housed 122 residents, including 23 children, over the course of last year. This is only a partial solution to be sure, but an important part of our community’s response to a growing problem nationwide. And it should be pointed out: this has all been accomplished with next to ZERO Evanston tax dollars.

Economic Development
I’m not sure which is the bigger win: spearheading the return of Northlight Theater to Evanston (breaking ground in the Fourth Ward this March!), championing UL’s corporate relocation to downtown Evanston, or the work I’ve done to support Evanston’s vibrant small business community. I’ll also include the historic Community Benefits package tied to the Ryan Field project, which will bring over $154 million into our community over the next decade and a half.
